Bighorn Sheep

My favorite bighorn sheep fact is that when young males leave their mothers, they search for a bachelor herd to join. It can take a long time to find and be accepted by a bachelor herd, and during this time, young rams are known to take up with other species out of loneliness.

I have gotten familiar with the coming and going of bighorn sheep - some weeks they cause traffic jams on the road, and then I'll go months without seeing one. Some of my favorite encounters with bighorn sheep have been in the backcountry, high up on Specimen Ridge or Mount Washburn, and I'm lucky to be able to see them in Big Sky as well!
